In the 2070's, mankind has established a mining base on the moon and dispatched men to explore Mars. The first manned mission to Jupiter is also in progress. As a result of this interplanetary activity, space debris is increasing and its collection has become a new profession.
Meet Yuri, Hachimaki, and Fee. Hachimaki's dream is to buy his own spaceship. He thinks he can earn money quickly by joining the crew of the first expedition to Jupiter. Yuri lost his wife in a space travel accident, and became a debris collector out of a desperate desire to discover some remembrance of her. Fee takes great pride in her profession and works very hard, having left behind her husband and young son on earth.
In a dark and cruel universe, each of these space junkers grapples with his or her own personal problems.
Trained as an elite pilot, Hachimaki Hoshino's life collecting space debris in orbit around Earth doesn't satisfy the engine of his ambition. So when the Earth Development Community begins to look for a crew to man Welnar Rocksmith's new Mars mission, which involves traveling to the red planet on the brand new space ship Brown Fawn in search of a specific breed of plant life, he naturally would want on.
His father, Goro Hoshino, is a legendary astronaut and has already been selected as the mission commander. But getting selected will mean proving the wealth of his knowledge in space, demonstrating his capacity for team work, and embracing love and friendship as guiding principles for his life.
After an excruciating selection process, Hachimaki is accepted into the Mars Development Project, his lifelong dream. However, feelings of elation are soon sucked up by a black hole of despair... Hachimaki's space odyssey forces him to face the void as he contemplates the meaning to his existence and the nature of his life in space.
An attack on the U.S. in orbital space may trigger a series of events that will bring the world to the brink of another war - with space as the battleground. The amount of debris created by such a conflict could spell the end for the careers on the DS-12. Did someone say, 'anti-war activism'?
Fee decides to spend more time with her family and questions whether she'll ever return to space. 500 million miles away, Hachimaki is at the threshold of a new era for mankind as the crew of the Von Braun finally reach Jupiter. Back on Earth, the engineer of the Jupiter Mission, Weiner Locksmith, becomes haunted by the deaths of all those who lost their lives in pursuit of his vision.
