Bashful college student Yusaku is madly in love with gorgeous Kyoko, the widowed manager of his apartment building, the comfortably shabby Maison Ikkoku. As Yusaku and handsome tennis coach Shun vie for Kyoko's affections, the other Maison Ikkoku residents - a motley crew of volatile personalities - can't resist meddling in their affairs.
Family pressure to make an arranged marriage pushes Coach Mitaka to put the screws to Kyoko, but the "brothers and sisters" of potential fiance Asuna Kujo (who's an only child) put a damper on engagement plans.
Then, a sudden embrace sends both Asuna and Godai reeling! Manager Kyoko takes flight on her first solo trip, and panicking Godai into spending his entire "marriage savings" to follow her!
Finally, Godai is drawn once again into Yagami's orbit when he accepts (and spends!) payment for tutoring sessions not yet taught...
Now they've gone and done it! After chancing upon the lovely Kyoko and the rakish Coach Mitaka in an oh-so-compromising situation, bumbling gadabout Godai's little world is sent twirling off its axis... again!
Attempting to quell the memory of her indiscreet dalliance (and hoping to get some rest and relaxation), Kyoko arranges to take a much-needed vacation. Kyoko must fight for her independence as her meddling, overprotective parents use every scheme imaginable to get her to give up her beloved job and move back home. Bumbling Yusaku meets the overly solicitous family of Kozue, whom he's reluctantly dating, and then ends up on one of those never-ending visits to his own doting folks.
In this volume, Kyoko's dog, Mr. Soichiro (named after her late husband), gets hopelessly lost. Then a misunderstanding causes Yusaku to move out of Maison Ikkoku in a huff. Unfortunately, the tiny apartment he moves into is still occupied - by a beautiful masseuse and her apelike husband.

Yusaku's New Year's fortune comes true, but he quickly learns he should be careful what he wishes for. When Valentine's Day arrives, Yusaku receives flowers from Kozue and then soon after from Kyoko - each with its own meaning. Kyoko's parents continue to meddle in her life, despite her protests.
